February 2011

We had a great meeting this month with well presented and well received bible study by Ron Kyllonen. These bible studies are something we are looking forward to more of in the coming months. Ron was followed up by our main speaker this month, Hal Moore. Hal's talk titled "Contemporary Theological Understandings” covered many interesting questions about the nature of religion as it has be and as it continues to evolve.

You can listen to the whole discussion and please leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. I want to comment on Bills comment at about 1:04:30.
Bill, you state that non-belief has been with us longer than belief. I would argue that may be true in relation to Christianity, but you can't make that argument with any scholarly evidence (that I know of) for pre-Christian societies or groups.
Hals point that mono-theism evolved out of poly-theism is probably accurate. You can't say, however, that polytheism evolved out of ahteism, because there is no historical record of that era (because it is pre-historic), other than cave paintings, which I wouldn't describe as evidence of atheism to any degree.
I would even argue that it is likely that as long as there has been language of any sort, much less written language, that unexplained phenomenon would be attributed to gods, or mystics, or higher powers. They almost certainly weren't attributed to anything resempling science.
I would continue, for that same length of time, those with mystical things, like fire, have used those things to elevate themselves to a position of power. Whether they claimed the power to be bestowed on them by a god, or not, we will never know.
