Monthly Meeting – February 5, 2017
Place: Radisson Conference Room

Speaker: Jim Noble
Jim Noble is a retired elder law attorney who lives in Brule, Wisconsin.  Previously, he taught political philosophy and philosophy of science at Ohio State.  He has a Ph. D from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York and a Bachelor's in philosophy from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Topic: What is a Just Society

Description:
This will be a philosophical discussion in which I will try to set forth a thoroughly secular ethics.  Humans are social and political animals who desire happiness, i.e. a good life.  A good life, I shall argue, is unattainable apart from a just society.  I shall further argue that a just society is one whose laws are consistent with the general will as characterized by Rousseau.  Some implications of this and examples of legitimate and illegitimate laws will also be discussed.

Dear Fellow Freethinkers,

It is time again to begin preparing for Darwin Day. The gala will be held again at Beaner's in Duluth, MN on February 12th from 7 to 9 PM. We look forward to celebrating your creativity through your talents at our 4th annual event.

Again, there will be cake and photo ops and even if you don't wish to share a talent, we'd be honored if you shared your time with us that evening.

Wanted: Book Club Members
A new LSF book club started in November 2016. There are currently 8 members. The group selected Steven Pinker's "The Blank Slate," as the first book, and has been meeting monthly on Saturday mornings. The group will be starting the next book in late February, so it is an ideal time to jump in if you'd like to join.
